The 5+1 Senses of Wellness: A New Framework for Everyday Balance
When life gets busy, it’s easy to feel ungrounded — like we’re running on autopilot without really being present. Over the years, I’ve discovered that one of the simplest ways to return to balance is to reconnect with our senses.
Our five senses — sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell — are more than just tools for survival. They are gateways to mindfulness. When we engage them intentionally, they bring us back into the moment, anchoring us in the here and now.
And then there’s the “+1” — our intuition, or inner awareness. This quiet sense is often overlooked, but it’s the one that ties everything together, helping us listen to ourselves and stay aligned with what truly matters.
Simple At-Home Practices for Everyday Balance
You don’t need a workshop to begin engaging your senses. Here are a few mindful practices you can try anytime, anywhere:
-
Sight: Pause to notice colors around you. Look at the sky, your plants, or even the clothes you’re wearing. Ask yourself, “How does this color make me feel?”
-
Sound: Take 5 minutes to close your eyes and just listen. Notice the hum of your surroundings, or play a piece of music that soothes you.
-
Touch: Hold a stone, a leaf, or even your favorite mug. Feel its texture and weight. Let it ground you in the present.
-
Taste: Eat one meal or snack slowly, mindfully. Notice the flavors, textures, and how your body feels as you chew.
-
Smell: Light a candle, diffuse essential oils, or simply smell fresh fruit. Take a deep breath and let the aroma shift your mood.
-
Intuition: Take a quiet moment each day to ask yourself, “What do I need right now?” Trust the first answer that arises.
A New Way of Living
The 5+1 senses aren’t just about wellness practices — they’re about living more consciously. Every time we engage our senses with awareness, we remind ourselves to slow down, to be present, and to find balance in the simplest of things.
This is why I designed our GenWell™ workshops the way I did — not to add more to-do’s into people’s lives, but to create mindful spaces where we can return to ourselves. Because at the end of the day, wellness isn’t complicated. It’s about choosing to notice, to feel, and to reconnect — one sense at a time.
Here’s to living life through the senses, and to finding balance in every moment.
